On Fiji we had booked in advance at a reasonable hotel in Nadi, Horizon Beach Resort 

Atle (22) had arrived a few hours before us. He travelled directly from Norway to Fiji.

We stayed 4 days in Nadi, - relaxing, swimming, shopping and had trips aound by taxi.

Horizon Beach Resort was a hotel much used by backpackers, travelling world wide, many of them for more than half a year. Most of them were yougsters, but there were also some in their second youth

flyplass-mottak.jpg (66489 byte) At the airport we were met by taxis and mini-cabs from various hotels, - free transport.

garbage fire.jpg (87139 byte) Garbage disposal was primitive on Fiji. Much was burned on open fire in the backyard.
Our hotel had also a garbage fire. I guess the next neighbour got the odour -

There were  two big stores in Nadi selling handicraft and souvenirs. There were high quality, pleasant sales staff and fair prices (no bargaining).

We hired him two days for touring.

suger cane2.jpg (59897 byte) We learned how to peel and chew sugar canes. It tasted like juice. Ram told us it was as healthy as juice, - unrefined sugar.
suger mill.jpg (42603 byte) In Lautoka there was the main reception of sugar. A lot of trucks were lined up with their loads.

bussen4.jpg (32084 byte) Ram had an appintment with some golf friends, so he could not stay long in Lakota. We wanted to use more time, so we took the local bus back to Nadi.

The bus was well air-conditioned - 
tempel.jpg (41579 byte) Sunday we hired Ram for a drive southwords to the Natadola beach. We passed by the a Hindu temple in Nadi.
bru.jpg (42615 byte) We passed some narrow bridges on our way to the beach. This bridge was originally built for railway.

There were two boats with Norwegian flags, Captain Cook's Cruises.

We had dinner at the hotel. It was good and reasonable.
We became familiar with a little gecco who was catching flies in the window.

dykker1.jpg (38370 byte) Atle joined a diving tour by a diving club near by the hotel. They were at the "Fish Market" on the reef in sea near Nadi.

biltur lautoka1.jpg (79324 byte) Saturday we had a ride to villages up in the hills east of Lakota, in the mountains of "The Sleeping Giant".

suger cane1.jpg (72172 byte) Ram was a clever guide. He told about the local farmes who grew sugar on contract.

lautoka on fire.jpg (39025 byte) After the mountain ride we drove down to Lautoka. There were market days in celebration of South Pacific Olympic Games. The market and streets were very lively.

taxi-sydover.jpg (33310 byte) The Landscape was green and furtile. In an area there was a pine plantation. It reminded us of Norway.
taxi-skogholt.jpg (69933 byte) Så kom vi til Natadola. Ram parkerte i et skogholt, og sa at her ville han ta ein lur. Vi kunne vere så lenge vi ville - utan noe vente-takst.

tourist information.jpg (39186 byte) We went to Tourist Information in Nadi. It was a private business, not an offcial office. We booked accomodation and boat tickets for two resorts in the Yasawa islands
