Justine had made an appointment so that I could visit a local primary
school. Tuesday morning I was there a couple of hous, while the
ladies were shopping. In the afternoon we went for our Northland tour. I
thought the school was so interesting that I wanted to see more of it, and
I was allowed to visit the school all Thursday.

Teaching how to read On Tuesday I visited first grade. In Norway I had heard about some Stavanger school that had adopted a method from New Zealand. And here I saw that they were organized exactly as how they had described. The students were organized in groups. When one group had intensive reading training, the other groups worked more or less independant. One group for instance had what they called egg-timer. They used an egg-timer to tell them how long they should work before they changed to next item. The training in reading was done in a gruop that was about the same level, and they had done home work in a book according to that level. All groups seemed to know what they should do, and worked impessivly independant. Preformance Thursday morning there was a performance final contest in the school . Two winners from each class should go to a regional contest. It took place in a big hall, with all 4 to 7 graders, teachers, some parents and a jury. The pupils read their own texts. The subjects were very personal and individual written. They knew the texts by heart, and used keywords for a help. They used different gimmicks to catch the attention of the audience, variation in voice, gestures and jokes. I was very impressed by their preformeces. Computers Eg visted grade 7. They had a training in using PowerPoint. The task was to make a fake computer game. They chose their own idea, and worked as they best could to find pictures and animations they could use to make the start of their own computer game. Some made animation themselves, other copied something they found on the Internet. Then they also should make pictures and logos for a poster presenting the game, and make a paper box (decorated) to put the CD into. When all was completed they got their product evaluated. They worked in pairs, two and two, and had about 8 computers to share. They worked independant, and were very clever using PowerPoint |
